Engagement Session Tips

An engagement session is an excellent way to become comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. It also allows you and your photographer to get to know each other better ahead of the wedding. Plus, engagement sessions can be a lot of fun! Here are some tips to help you prepare and make the most of your session.

Quick Tips

  • Consider a trip to the salon to have your hair coloured (if you colour) and a trim at least two weeks before your session. This will give your hair style a chance to settle before hand.

  • Treat yourself to a manicure the day before the shoot (this goes for the men as well). You will be much happier with your ring photos.

  • Think about getting your ring cleaned before your photo session.  Most jewelry stores will do them for free, and it will make a difference in the photos.

  • A few days before coordinate your outfits. Try on the clothes you plan to wear, look for colors that complement each other and the theme of your engagement session.

  • Have a hair trial planned? Have your hair trial planned for the same day of your engagement, giving you the opportunity to try your hair style out in front of the camera.

  • Have a light meal before your engagement session, its no fun being hungry!

Location

When choosing a location for your engagement session, consider the feel you want for your photos.

  • Outdoors and woodsy? Consider beautiful gardens and conservation areas.

  • Urban city feel? Think of coffee shops, visiting the park, strolling by the waterfront.

  • Laid back and cozy? Go for casual dress and quiet moments at your favourite place.

Consider locations that reflect your personality as a couple or even just a favorite place. Don’t rule out your favourite coffee shop, the local arcade or hiking trail as options.

What to wear

Looking good is important but so is being comfortable. Don’t choose an outfit that makes you uncomfortable or feel out of place. If you feel uncomfortable, you may look uncomfortable in your photos. Dress for the weather. You will be far more comfortable and will enjoy yourself if you dress for the current temperature.

Coordinate and compliment each other by wearing varying hues or shades. Avoid both wearing patterns. However, don’t feel like you need to dress to match each other.

Things to bring

  • Hair brush or comb for quick fixes

  • A small makeup kit or lip gloss

  • Water bottle

  • A blanket for sitting shots

  • If your plan to bring your family pet, bring treats to encourage them through out the session

Remember to have Fun

Engagement sessions are meant to be fun. Laugh, flirt, joke and truly enjoy yourself in front of the camera. Its a wonderful opportunity to get great photos of you as a couple looking your best. You can use these photos for you wedding website, save the date cards, invitations and guestbook. They will also be photos that you will treasure and enjoy for years to come. :-)
